CD/DVD Media FAQ - how to make a CD or DVD that SMS can read without a modchip

Independence Exploit - how to install the PS2 memory card exploit for homebrew use on non-modded PS2's

Q: How do i launch SMS?

A: The easiest way to get SMS up and running, if you have a modchip, is to just download the CD Image from this site, and burn it. you can burn it with Nero, Alcohol, or DVD Decrypter, which is free.

Q: What if i have no modchip?

A: If you have Swap magic, the CD image will work with that too, so long as it is the CD version of Swap Magic. some versions of swap magic will allow you to boot from the memory card or pendrive too.

A2: You could use the Independence Exploit. there's more information on that at www.exploitstation.com. it only works with old fat PS2 models. not the slimline models.

A3: if you have Action Replay Max Evo - the one that has a Genesis emulator, you can boot SMS from that by following the same instructions as for setting up Pgen, except replacing Pgen with SMS.

A4: Install SMS as an HDLoader game using WinHIIP. you need retail HDLoader or HDAdvance.

Q: How do i install SMS so i don't have to use a CD to boot it?

A: you can only do this if you have a modchip capable of booting in Dev1 mode. to install SMS onto your memory card

1. Download the CD image with uLaunchELF from this site.
2. Download the latest ELF version of SMS from the downloads page. Rename it to BOOT.ELF. (all capitals) and put it onto a USB Pendrive.
3. Boot up uLaunchELF from the CD, and use the file browser to create a folder called BOOT on your memory card (mc0).
4. using the uLaunchELF file browser, copy BOOT.ELF file from your pendrive (MASS) into it.
From now on, you should be able to start SMS by holding down R1 when you switch on your PS2.

Q: USBD.IRX?

A: you don't need USBD.IRX anymore, it's built into SMS. but you can use your own if you need to. put it into the SMS folder on your memory card.

You can start USB support from the SMS menu. press start in SMS. it's under Device settings.

Q: How do i burn these BIN files?

Note that this is a CD image, not a DVD image.

A1: DVD Decrypter: go to Mode menu, ISO, Write. Drag the BIN file onto the program. choose your recorder, then click Write.

A2: Nero StartSmart: click the copy and backup category, choose burn image to disc. wait forever while Nero Express loads, then choose the CUE file.

A3: Nero Burning ROM: Close the new compilaion dialog, then choose 'Burn Image' from the Recorder menu. select the CUE file, and click the burn button.
